Each glass slat is held at both ends by a metal clip — a small bracket that grips the glass edge and allows it to pivot. Over time, clips corrode, crack, or lose their grip, allowing individual slats to rattle, sit at wrong angles, or fall out of the frame entirely. This is a classic link bar problem. The link bar connects all the clips on one side of the window to the operator. If the link bar has become disconnected from one or more clips, those slats stop responding to the operator while the others continue moving. It's usually a straightforward repair — we reattach the link bar to the disengaged clips and test the full movement range.
Are jalousie windows energy efficient?
Honestly, no — not compared to modern sealed double-pane windows. Even when fully closed, jalousie windows have inherent air gaps around each slat that allow air infiltration. This is why they're most appropriate for porches, sunrooms, basements, and garages rather than primary living spaces where heating and cooling efficiency matters. In the right application, however, their ventilation performance is unmatched by any modern window type.
Can you replace just one broken slat, or do they all need to be replaced?
