We size the gap to work correctly in summer — the slight looseness you might feel in winter is normal and much less of a problem than a door that won't close in August.
My door closes but the latch won't catch unless I lift the handle — what's wrong?
The door has dropped at the hinge side, which is extremely common in Long Island homes with solid wood entry doors. The latch bolt is now lower than the strike plate mortise. We tighten and reinforce the hinge screws — sometimes using longer screws that reach the structural framing behind the jamb — and reposition the strike plate to align with the new latch position.
