A Long Island homeowner's guide
Repair or Replace Your Windows? What to Check First
Most windows on Long Island are replaced for problems that can be repaired: fogged glass, a stripped crank, a rotted sill, drafts. Replacing the window fixes those. So does a repair, usually for about 20% of the cost. Here's how to tell which you need.
Problems that can usually be repaired
- Fog between the panesA new glass unit, same frame
- Cracked or broken glassA new pane or unit
- Crank spins, window won't stay upA new operator or balance
- Soft or rotted sill or sashRot removed and rebuilt
- DraftsRecaulking and new weatherstripping
- Sticking or won't lockAdjustment
When replacement is the better answer
Replace when the frame itself is rotted through in several places, the window is a type that can't be serviced, or you're changing the size or style of the opening. We'll tell you at the estimate if that's where you are.
What each option costs
Repairs we do range from $300 for a single pane to a few thousand dollars for a full rebuild. A new replacement window from the big brands, installed, costs several times that per opening. Repair also keeps your trim, paint and original wood.

Questions homeowners ask
Is it better to repair or replace old windows?
Usually repair. If the frame is sound, we replace foggy or broken glass, rebuild rotten wood and fix cranks, balances and locks for a fraction of replacement. If a window is past saving, we'll tell you.
Is it worth replacing 20 year old windows?
Not usually for age alone. At 20 years the parts that wear out (glass seals, operators, balances and weatherstripping) can all be replaced. Replace only if the frames have failed.
What is the average cost of replacing a window?
It varies by brand and size; installed replacement windows cost several times a typical repair. Get a repair quote first. It's free.
