Kitchen Cabinet Door Repair and Adjustment by Prestige Window Works, serving Long Island

Kitchen Cabinet Doors Adjustment

Kitchen cabinet doors develop alignment problems gradually, and most homeowners adjust to the slight scrape on the frame, the door that won't close without a firm push, or the gap that appears at one corner when everything else is flush. The problems are consistent and predictable: hinges that have worked loose over years, doors that have moved out of square, and hardware that has worn out.
Prestige Window Works provides professional kitchen cabinet door adjustment and repair throughout Nassau and Suffolk County. We diagnose the actual cause of each door's misalignment — loose hinge screws, worn hinge mechanisms, cabinet box movement, or door warping — and address it correctly rather than masking the symptom with a shim that will fail again in six months.
Most adjustment work is completed in a single visit without removing cabinets or disrupting the kitchen. We serve homeowners from our Manhasset office in Nassau County and our Hauppauge office in Suffolk County. From Garden City and Roslyn Heights in Nassau to Greenlawn and Kings Park in Suffolk, call 516-908-8005 for a free on-site estimate.

7 Cabinet Door Problems We Fix

Cabinet door problems are consistent across Long Island's housing stock — the same failure modes appear in kitchens from Glen Cove to Kings Park regardless of cabinet brand or style. Here is what drives the calls we receive across Nassau and Suffolk County.
Kitchen Cabinet Door Repair and Adjustment across Nassau and Suffolk County by Prestige Window Works
Sagging Door
One or both doors in a pair hang noticeably lower than when installed — the gap at the top of the door is wider than at the bottom, or the door scrapes the cabinet frame on closing. The hinge screws have worked loose in the face frame or cabinet box, allowing the door weight to pull the hinge plate away from its correct position. Tightening worn screw holes with correct anchoring and resetting hinge positions restores the door to level without replacing any cabinet components.
Won't Stay Closed
The door springs open after closing or does not hold its closed position. The hinge clip or catch mechanism has worn past the point where its spring tension holds the door, or the magnetic or roller catch is no longer aligned with the door's resting position. We replace worn clips and catches and realign the catch strike to the correct closing position for the door's adjusted hang.
Scrapes the Frame
The door catches or drags against the cabinet face frame on opening or closing — producing a visible wear mark on the door edge or the frame. The door has shifted out of its original hung position and its edge is now contacting the frame before the hinge reach is complete. Euro-style concealed hinges allow three-axis adjustment — height, depth, and lateral — to correct this precisely without removing the door from the cabinet.
Uneven Gap
The gap between adjacent doors, or between the door and the cabinet frame, is noticeably wider at one edge than the other. A uniform reveal around all four edges of a cabinet door is the correct result — any taper in that gap indicates the door is out of square with the opening. We adjust the hinge positions to restore uniform gap across the full door perimeter.
Loose Hinge
The hinge itself moves when the door is opened — the hinge plate shifts on the face frame, or the hinge cup wobbles in its pressed hole in the door panel. Loose hinges that are not addressed continue to work the fastener holes larger with every open/close cycle until the door can no longer be hung correctly without full hole repair. We anchor loose hinges correctly before that point is reached.
Worn Hardware
The hinge, soft-close mechanism, or push-to-open system has worn out and needs replacement. Emtek and Marks USA cabinet hardware are the most commonly replaced brands in Long Island kitchens — we carry replacement hinges, soft-close inserts, and catch hardware for all standard cabinet configurations and can source non-standard sizes for custom cabinetry.
Warped Door
The door panel has warped slightly — bowing outward at the centre or twisting at a corner — so that it no longer sits flat in the opening. Minor warping in wood and MDF cabinet doors is common in Long Island kitchens where humidity cycling is pronounced and ventilation behind closed cabinet doors is limited. Adjusting the hinge depth settings compensates for moderate warping without door replacement; significant warping requires panel replacement which we can advise on at the estimate visit.

What We Adjust and Repair

Kitchen cabinet door service covers several distinct tasks — we assess all of them at the estimate visit and quote only what the specific doors actually need.

Euro hinge adjustment — the three-axis adjustment of concealed cup hinges on frameless and face-frame cabinets. Height, lateral, and depth settings are adjusted independently to bring the door to the correct position in the opening. Most Long Island cabinet doors installed since the 1990s use this hinge type and can be fully corrected through adjustment alone without hardware replacement.

Hinge screw anchoring — where hinge screws have worked loose in enlarged pilot holes, we anchor the holes with wooden dowel plugs or appropriate filler, allow correct cure, and reinstall the hinge screws to full bite. This is the correct repair for loose hinges — not tightening a screw that has nothing left to grip.

Soft-close mechanism service — soft-close inserts that no longer dampen the door's closing action, or that have seized and prevent the door from closing smoothly, are replaced with correctly-rated units for the door weight and hinge configuration.

Catch and strike realignment — magnetic catches, roller catches, and push-to-open mechanisms realigned to the correct position for the door's adjusted hang. A catch that was correctly positioned before adjustment will be out of position after, and must be moved to the new door position to hold correctly.

Hardware replacement — full hinge replacement where the mechanism itself has worn beyond its adjustment range. We match replacement hinges to the existing cup hole diameter and overlay specification so no new holes need to be drilled in the door or cabinet box.

This service connects naturally to our door adjustment service for exterior and interior passage doors, and to our window adjustment service — the same diagnostic approach applied to a different scale of door and hardware.
Why Cabinet Doors Go Out of Alignment on Long Island
Cabinet door misalignment on Long Island has the same root cause as window and door misalignment in the same homes — the island's climate creates wood movement conditions that work on every joint, hinge, and fastener in the building over time.

Long Island's humidity cycling is the primary driver. Summer humidity causes wood framing, cabinet boxes, and door panels to absorb moisture and expand. Winter heating cycles dry them out and they contract. Every cycle places stress on the hinge screws anchoring the door to the cabinet face frame — and over years of daily opening and closing combined with that moisture cycling, the screw holes enlarge, the hinges work loose, and the door drops fractionally out of the position it was hung in. In kitchens with frameless euro-style cabinets, the same process works on the hinge cup insert pressed into the door panel.

The problem is not the cabinet or the door — it is the hardware at a predictable point in its service cycle. The fix is hardware service and correct reinstallation — not cabinet replacement, not a new kitchen.

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

Can cabinet doors be adjusted without replacing the hinges?
In most cases yes. Euro-style concealed hinges — the most common type on Long Island cabinets installed since the 1990s — have three-axis adjustment built in. Height, lateral position, and depth can all be corrected through the adjustment screws on the hinge body without removing or replacing the hinge. Replacement is only needed when the hinge mechanism itself has worn out or when the screw holes have enlarged beyond the point where the hinge can be correctly anchored.
Why do kitchen cabinet doors go out of alignment over time?
The primary cause on Long Island is the combination of daily use wear and the humidity cycling the island's climate produces. Every open-and-close cycle places stress on the hinge screws and the wood fibres surrounding them. Long Island's summer humidity causes cabinet boxes and door panels to expand; winter heating dries them out and they contract. Over years, these cycles enlarge the pilot holes the hinge screws sit in and allow the door to drift out of its original hung position. The mechanism is the same as window and door misalignment in the same homes — just at kitchen scale.
How long does cabinet door adjustment take?
A typical Nassau or Suffolk County kitchen with 10–15 cabinet doors that need adjustment is completed in 2–3 hours on-site. Individual door adjustments take 10–20 minutes each depending on the hinge type and the extent of correction needed. We complete most Long Island cabinet door jobs in a single visit.
Do you adjust cabinet doors in bathrooms and other rooms as well as kitchens?
Yes. The same euro hinge adjustment and hardware service applies to bathroom vanity doors, laundry room cabinets, built-in cabinetry in living spaces, and any other room with face-frame or frameless cabinet doors. The service is not limited to kitchens — we adjust and repair cabinet doors throughout the home on Long Island.
How much does kitchen cabinet door adjustment cost on Long Island?
Cost depends on the number of doors, the type of work required for each — adjustment only, screw anchoring, or hardware replacement — and whether any soft-close or push-to-open mechanisms need replacing. We provide a written quote at the free estimate visit. Call 516-908-8005 to schedule.
What related services do you offer alongside cabinet door adjustment?
Cabinet door work is closely related to our door adjustment service for exterior and interior passage doors, and to our window adjustment service — the same alignment and hardware expertise at a different scale. If your kitchen has both cabinet door and exterior door issues, we assess and quote both at the same free estimate visit. We also carry Emtek and Marks USA replacement hardware for all standard cabinet configurations.
