Had window sills replaced as well as the bottom of my slider replaced which had rotted away after forty years. The work was completed just before the nor’easter and they came through with flying colors! They look just like our other window sills which did not require replacement and our slider works like new and all for a fraction of the price to replace. Very pleased with the work done!

Window Reglazing Service on Long Island

Window reglazing is the repair that most Long Island homeowners with wood-framed windows eventually need and rarely think about until a problem has already developed. Glazing compound — the putty-like sealant between the glass and the wood rebate — dries out, shrinks, and cracks over time, shortening considerably in Long Island's coastal climate and under its freeze-thaw cycling. Once the seal breaks, water enters the junction on every rain event.
Prestige Window Works provides professional window reglazing throughout Nassau and Suffolk County. We remove all deteriorated compound, prepare the rebate and glass edge, and apply new glazing compound in a clean, properly profiled bead that bonds to both surfaces and sheds water away from the glass-to-frame junction. The result is a window sealed correctly at its most vulnerable joint — restored to the condition it was in when originally glazed.
We serve Long Island homeowners from our Manhasset office in Nassau County and our Hauppauge office in Suffolk County.

From Port Washington and Hempstead across Nassau to Babylon and Islip in Suffolk, wood window reglazing is one of the most consistent maintenance needs across Long Island's older housing stock. Call 516-908-8005 or fill out the form on a website for a free estimate.

Signs Your Windows Need Reglazing

Glazing compound fails gradually and its early stages are easy to miss. By the time the damage is obvious, water has usually been entering the glass-to-frame junction for multiple seasons. Long Island's climate accelerates every stage of this progression. Here is what to look for on your wood sash windows before the next maintenance cycle.

Cracked Compound

The glazing compound shows surface cracks running along its length or at angles across the bead. Cracks mean the compound has hardened beyond its elastic range and can no longer accommodate the wood frame's seasonal movement — every crack is a water entry path on Long Island's rain-facing elevations, and will widen further through the next freeze-thaw season without intervention.

Separated Edges

The compound has pulled away from the glass edge, the wood rebate, or both — leaving a visible gap between the compound and the surface it was originally bonded to. This is the failure mode most commonly found on Marvin and Pella wood-framed windows that have been in service for 20 or more years, where the differential movement between wood and glass has worked the compound loose over decades of seasonal cycling.

Missing Sections

Sections of glazing compound are entirely absent — fallen out, crumbled away, or removed and never replaced. A gap between glass and frame is a direct water infiltration path and a draft source, and any section of missing compound on a Long Island property will admit moisture on every rain event until it is replaced. Missing compound at the sill section is particularly damaging because water pools there longest.

Powdery Surface

The compound feels powdery or chalky when touched and crumbles under light pressure rather than holding its form. This indicates the linseed oil binder has fully dried out — common on south and west-facing windows on Long Island properties where UV exposure is concentrated, and on any window that has gone more than 15 years without maintenance. Powdery compound provides no weather seal even where it appears visually intact.

Paint Lifted at Bead

The paint over the glazing compound has bubbled, cracked, or lifted along the compound line. Paint on glazing compound depends on the compound remaining stable beneath it — when the compound has cracked or pulled away, the paint film above it lifts with it. Paint separation along the glazing line is a reliable surface indicator of compound failure even when the compound itself is not yet visibly deteriorated.

Visible Daylight

Light is visible through the glass-to-frame junction from inside the room when the window is closed. Any visible gap at this junction represents a complete failure of the glazing seal — air, water, and insects have an unobstructed path through the opening. This stage of failure is most commonly found in older Columbia and Atrium wood window installations that have been in service for 30 or more years without maintenance.
Interior Water Staining
Water staining appears on the interior window reveal, sill, or wall surface below the window after rain. Staining below the glass-to-frame junction is a direct consequence of failed glazing compound allowing water to enter at the glass edge and track down the interior face of the frame. By the time interior staining is visible, the frame wood at the sill has been absorbing moisture through multiple seasons — this is the condition that leads directly to the rotten window repair calls we receive from Long Island homeowners whose reglazing maintenance was deferred too long.
How to Tell If Your Window Has Wood Rot

Window Brands We Reglaze on Long Island

Reglazing technique and compound selection vary between wood window manufacturers — the rebate depth, the glass thickness, and the original compound specification differ across brands. We reglaze wood sash windows from all major manufacturers found in Long Island's housing stock.

Marvin Integrity and Ultimate Series wood windows — among the most common premium wood windows in Nassau County's North Shore housing — have specific rebate profiles that require correctly-sized compound beads. Pella Architect Series and wood double-hung windows are widely found in Suffolk County mid-range construction and take standard oil-based compound with a painted finish.

Columbia wood and wood-clad windows — common in Long Island's 1970s–1990s housing stock — have shallower rebates that require attention to compound depth to avoid proud edges that shed paint prematurely.

Atrium wood windows, found throughout Nassau County's established residential neighbourhoods, and Andersen 400 Series wood and wood-clad units both have well-documented reglazing procedures that we follow correctly for each brand's specific glass retention system.

For any wood window brand not listed here — including original unbranded sash found in Long Island's pre-war housing stock — we assess the rebate profile on-site and apply the correct compound type and application technique.

Long Island Exposure

Wood window glazing compound has a finite service life under any conditions — but Long Island's climate shortens it more aggressively than most homeowners expect. The island's position between the Sound and the Atlantic creates a moisture and temperature cycling environment that works on exposed oil-based glazing compound from multiple directions simultaneously.

The freeze-thaw cycle is the primary driver of compound failure on Long Island. In January and February, outdoor temperatures cross the freezing point repeatedly — sometimes multiple times in a single day. Over a season, this movement works the hardened compound loose from the wood and glass surfaces it is bonded to. By the time compound is visibly crumbling, it has been admitting water at the micro-crack level for years.

Coastal exposure compounds this on properties across Nassau's South Shore communities like Lynbrook and Mineola, and throughout Suffolk's waterfront towns. Salt-laden air dries oil-based compounds faster than inland conditions — stripping the linseed oil that gives the putty its flexibility and leaving behind a hardened, brittle bead that cracks under the significant temperature change.

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

What is glazing compound and why does it need replacing?
Glazing compound — sometimes called window putty — is the sealant bedded in the rebate between the glass pane and the surrounding wood frame on single-pane wood sash windows. It seals the glass-to-frame junction against water and air infiltration. Over time it dries out, shrinks, and cracks — particularly in Long Island's freeze-thaw cycling and coastal humidity — until the seal fails and water begins entering the junction on every rain event. Replacing it restores the seal and prevents the water ingress that leads to frame rot.
How often should wood windows be reglazed on Long Island?
A well-applied, primed, and painted reglazing job typically lasts 10–15 years under normal Long Island inland conditions. Properties with significant coastal or South Shore exposure — where salt air dries the compound faster and UV degradation is more aggressive — should expect a shorter interval of 7–10 years. The practical test is visual and tactile inspection: if the compound is cracking, separating from the glass or wood, or crumbles under light pressure, it needs replacement regardless of when it was last done.
Can reglazing be done without removing the sash from the frame?
For most standard double-hung and casement windows on Long Island, we can reglaze in place without removing the sash — particularly where access to the exterior glazing bead is possible from ground level or with a ladder. For upper-floor windows with limited exterior access, or for windows where the frame condition requires more extensive work, sash removal may be necessary. We assess this at the estimate visit and advise on the approach for your specific windows.
How much does window reglazing cost on Long Island?
Cost depends on the number of windows, the number of panes per window, the extent of compound removal and rebate preparation required, and whether the frame needs any repair work before reglazing can proceed. We provide a written itemised quote at the free estimate visit. Call 516-908-8005 to schedule.
Is reglazing the same as glass replacement?
No — they address different components of the window. Reglazing replaces the glazing compound that seals the glass into the wood frame rebate, without removing or replacing the glass itself. Glass replacement removes the existing pane and installs a new one — which may also require reglazing of the new pane into the frame. Our glass replacement service and glass cutting service cover the glass component; reglazing addresses the sealant that holds it in place.
What related services do you recommend alongside reglazing?
On any property where reglazing is needed, we also assess the frame perimeter caulking — the seal between the window frame and the surrounding exterior cladding. Failed caulk at the frame perimeter combined with failed glazing compound means water has two entry paths rather than one. Our window recaulking service addresses the perimeter seal; reglazing addresses the glass-to-frame seal. Both are typically needed together on Long Island wood windows that have reached the maintenance threshold.
